Institute for Crisis Management and Peace Building (ICMPB)

A Beacon of Resilience and Reconciliation in the Horn of Africa

Message from the Director

Daud Hassan, Director – Institute for Crisis Management and Peace Building

Welcome to the Institute for Crisis Management and Peace Building (ICMPB) at the University of Burao. In a region marked by complex challenges—from climate-induced droughts to inter-clan conflict—our institute stands as a dedicated hub for generating solutions, building resilience, and promoting sustainable peace. We bridge the critical gap between academic research and practical action, working directly with communities, traditional leaders, and policymakers to transform conflict and build a more secure future for the Somali community and the Horn of Africa.

We invite you to join us in this important mission.

Overview of the Institute

The Institute for Crisis Management and Peace Building (ICMPB) is a premier academic and research center established to address the interconnected challenges of environmental crises, political instability, and humanitarian emergencies facing our region.

We serve as a dynamic platform for:

  • Innovative Research — Conducting cutting-edge, field-based studies on the root causes of conflict and disaster.
  • Specialized Education — Offering training and degree programs to build a new generation of crisis managers and peacebuilders.
  • Community Engagement — Implementing practical, on-the-ground interventions that save lives and strengthen social cohesion.
  • Policy Advocacy — Translating our research into actionable recommendations for governments and international agencies.

Our work is guided by a core principle:

  • Integrating proven traditional knowledge with modern techniques to create context-specific, effective, and lasting solutions.

Our Work & Core Departments

Our Core Departments:

Center for Conflict Resolution & Peace Building

The heart of our reconciliation work. We facilitate dialogue, train mediators in both traditional (Xeer) and modern techniques, and support peace processes at the community and regional levels to resolve disputes over resources, politics, and borders.

Center for Drought & Crisis Management

Focused on the existential threat of climate change, this center develops and implements early warning systems for droughts and famines. We research sustainable water management, climate-smart agriculture, and lead emergency response planning to mitigate the impact of environmental shocks.

Center for Awareness, Communication, and Dialogue

Ensures our work reaches those who need it most. The center manages stakeholder communication, runs public awareness campaigns on peace and preparedness, and uses media (including radio and social media) to promote dialogue and counter misinformation.

Our Key Activities Include:

  • Hosting international workshops and training certificates on mediation and humanitarian response.
  • Conducting field research on the links between climate change, migration, and conflict.
  • Deploying mobile peace units and resource management committees to conflict hotspots.
  • Publishing policy briefs and analysis for local and international stakeholders.
  • Building the capacity of local government and community leaders.
