University of Burao
The University of Burao (UoB), founded nearly two decades ago in Burao, Somaliland, is a community-based higher education institution committed to advancing knowledge, professional skills, and social development. Despite limited financial support at its inception—relying primarily on contributions from local businesses, diaspora communities, and modest government assistance—UoB has grown into a reputable center for learning and research. It plays a pivotal role in fostering human capital for Togdheer region and beyond, contributing significantly to governance, peacebuilding, and socio-economic development.
UoB has established itself as a multi-disciplinary institution, currently operating one postgraduate school, 11 faculties, and seven technical departments. Its academic and technical programs emphasize high-quality teaching, applied research, and community engagement, particularly in priority areas such as health, education, agriculture, and natural resource management. The university continues to attract outstanding professionals and build strong partnerships with local administrations, NGOs, UN agencies, and the private sector, thereby extending its regional influence.
The institution’s vision emphasizes empowering individuals through holistic education, combining pedagogy and self-learning to prepare students for professional excellence and civic responsibility. Guided by its mission and core values, UoB strives to create an enabling environment for teaching, learning, and innovation, while upholding academic freedom, respect for diversity, and a culture of transparency and accountability. The university remains dedicated to serving as a role model for community-based higher education in Somaliland.
Looking ahead, UoB’s 2023–2027 Strategic Plan outlines four key priorities: organizational and institutional development, educational excellence, community engagement, and financial sustainability. Through targeted investments in infrastructure, digitalization, research capacity, and resource mobilization, the university aims to strengthen its role as a driver of knowledge, social transformation, and regional development. With continued support from government, diaspora, development partners, and the local community, UoB is positioned to consolidate its achievements and expand its impact in the years ahead.
