Background of Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science

The Faculty of Agriculture & Environmental Science can trace its roots back to 2011 with the foundation of the Agriculture Department within the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science at University of Burao. The Department of Environmental Science was established in 2020, and joined the Department of Agriculture to form the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science.

The Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees in Agriculture and Environmental Science.

Mission: 

The mission of the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Science is to produce competitive Agricultural and Environmental professionals through teaching, research and community engagement.

Our academic and strategic plan outlines how we plan to accomplish our mission. Through the plan, we have identified four key priority areas for growth and integration within the faculty. The four priority areas are as follows;

BACKGROUND OF THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Introduction

The agriculture is the backbone of the Somaliland economy and is a key source of Job creation, Income generation, Food security, Foreign exchange earnings, Poverty alleviation and Sustainable development. Public priority to produce agricultural graduates has been a major factor in an establishment of the agriculture department with increased emphasis on agriculture courses.   

The agriculture curriculum was established in 2011, with the aim of producing competent and qualified graduates in agriculture disciplines. 

Program Educational Objectives /Program Goals:
The Department of Agriculture is to improve agricultural production and productivity and enhance sustainable use of the natural resource base, in contribution to the development of the agricultural sector and the nation’s overall food security and livelihood and the environmental wellbeing. The Department of Agriculture is also to deliver the highest quality academic programs; produce professional agriculture graduates, equip with strong knowledge and skills in agricultural production, processes and farming based on agricultural, natural, technical and economical sciences in diverse areas of agriculture.

Job Prospects after B.Sc. in agriculture
The field of agriculture is vast, and so are the job opportunities in this domain. Starting from farming to taking the produce to consumers, there are many types of industries and organizations playing a role in the agricultural area. Therefore, students completing the B.Sc degree in agriculture can find various profitable job options with such agriculture industries and organizations. They can work with government, NGOs, research institutions and agro-financing corporations as well as food processing companies and fertilizer firms. The potential programs they can work on include: Food security and livelihoods, Nutrition schemes, Microfinance programs, Rangeland Management and conservation, Soil and water conservation and management, Conservation, Agriculture, crop production, irrigation infrastructure, agriculture education and extension, and researches etc.
